Google’s Self-Designed Tensor Chips will Power Its Next

Tech giant Google is doubling down on its custom hardware ambitions, announcing that its next generation of Pixel and AI-powered devices will be powered by its in-house Tensor chips. The move highlights Google’s growing focus on vertically integrated hardware and AI-optimized performance.

The upcoming Tensor G4, expected to debut with the Pixel 9 lineup later this year, is the latest evolution of Google’s proprietary chipset series, which started in 2021. Developed in collaboration with Samsung’s foundry, the Tensor chips are designed to handle AI-heavy tasks such as real-time language translation, advanced photography, voice recognition, and more — all on-device.

Unlike traditional processors, Google’s Tensor chips are specifically engineered with machine learning at the core. Early leaks suggest improved GPU performance, better thermals, and enhanced AI-driven features, including on-device Gemini assistant enhancements and real-time video processing.

Competing in a Custom Silicon Race

Google joins the likes of Apple (with its M-series and A-series chips) and Microsoft (with its custom AI processors) in building bespoke silicon. The aim? Deliver faster, smarter, and more integrated hardware experiences.
